Concept store. Outdoor and camping, Hobart
A concept store for a Tasmanian hiking gear brand that sells on specs, not slogans.

The brief
Ridgeback Outfitters is a fictional Hobart brand that makes technical hiking and camping gear. We designed this store as a concept to show what a Laneway build looks like for outdoor retail. It is not a real client and the products are not for sale. The imagined brief: buyers are researchers, so the store has to answer weight, capacity, waterproof rating and fit before they open another tab.
Layout built for people who compare
Outdoor buyers read specs. The full-bleed hero sets the mood, and every product page puts weight, capacity and ratings in a plain table directly under the price. Condensed uppercase headings and a high-visibility orange accent echo gear labelling, and the dark green band sections break up long pages without extra imagery.
Product pages show a fit and size note near the add to cart button. For packs that means torso length, for jackets a measuring guide. Fit is the biggest cause of returns in this category.
A catalogue that follows how people plan trips
Collections are built around the trip: packs, shelter and sleep, clothing, cook. Metafields hold weight, capacity and temperature rating, so Shopify's Search & Discovery filters can offer a weight slider and a rating filter without hand-tagging every product. The same metafields feed the spec table, so a spec changes in one place.
Variants are kept short. Torso length and colour are the only pack options, and size on jackets. Fewer options mean fewer out-of-stock combinations and cleaner inventory.
Australian specifics
Prices are GST inclusive and shown in AUD. Bulky items such as tents ship by StarTrack, small items by Australia Post, with CouriersPlease as the backup option. Tasmania is a common surcharge trap for mainland stores, but a Hobart-based brand can offer Tasmania as the fast zone and price the rest honestly.
A 60-day trial return policy is written to sit alongside the consumer guarantees under the Australian Consumer Law, and Afterpay and Zip are offered at checkout for higher-value items such as tents and sleeping bags. For more on this kind of build, see our outdoor and camping page.
