Shopify for outdoor and camping
Shopify for Australian outdoor and camping brands
Hikers and campers research before they buy. They compare weights, fabrics and ratings, then buy once they trust the gear. We build Shopify stores that carry technical detail, handle bulky parcels and manage seasonal demand.

Example store
Ridgeback Outfitters
A concept store for a Tasmanian hiking gear brand that sells on specs, not slogans.
What makes outdoor and camping hard to sell online
Technical detail
Packs, tents and sleeping bags are bought on specifications: weight, volume, temperature rating, fabric. Pages that bury these lose research-heavy buyers.
Bulky and heavy freight
Tents and packs are large, and cubic weight affects cost. Flat rates can quietly lose money on remote addresses.
Dangerous goods
Items such as gas canisters, fuel and some batteries have carrier restrictions. They can't go in the same parcel or service as everyday goods.
Seasonal swings
Demand rises before long weekends, school holidays and winter trips, and EOFY and Boxing Day sales matter as well.
What we build into the store
Spec tables and comparison
Structured fields for weight, packed size, fabric and rating, with side-by-side product comparison.
Fit and size finder
Pack torso length and apparel sizing help, with clear returns for gear that does not fit.
Kits and bundles
Sleep systems and trip kits sold as bundles, with stock tracked per piece.
Freight by weight and size
Shipping profiles based on weight and dimensions, with restrictions for items carriers will not move.
Questions and reviews
A reviews and Q&A app, so experienced buyers can help newcomers. We do not seed content.
Back-in-stock and pre-orders
Capture demand when a new season sells out.
The Australian rules we design around
Some outdoor products, such as gas cartridges, fuel and certain batteries, are treated as dangerous goods by carriers and have restrictions on how they can be sent. Check Australia Post and your other carriers' current dangerous goods lists before offering them. Products with button batteries, such as some headlamps, fall under mandatory Australian standards for button and coin batteries. Technical claims such as waterproof ratings should match your test data, because misleading claims breach consumer law.
General information, not legal advice. Check with the regulator for your situation.
Pages that serve research-driven buyers
A hiker comparing three packs wants numbers, not adjectives. We structure product data so specs are consistent across the catalogue, which supports comparison tables, collection filters and good search results.
Our concept store Ridgeback Outfitters shows a spec-led layout with a full-bleed hero. It is a concept we designed, not a client.
Shipping bulky and restricted goods
- Set rates by weight and dimensions, using cubic weight where carriers charge by it.
- Separate restricted items into their own shipping profile, or do not ship them online.
- Show remote-area surcharges or exclude postcodes that cost too much.
- Use Australia Post, StarTrack or Aramex, depending on size and speed. See shipping options.
Sale calendar and stockists
Outdoor brands sell hard before long weekends and into winter. We plan EOFY, Black Friday, Boxing Day and pre-season launches, with email flows ready. If you supply outdoor shops, we add trade pricing through tags and an app, or Plus B2B.
Brands usually fit Custom for the design and data setup. See pricing or talk to us.
What a good outdoor product page needs
Outdoor buyers research before they spend, and they compare. A page that gives the numbers saves them opening six other tabs.
- A spec table with weight, packed size, capacity, dimensions and materials, using the supplier's figures.
- Packed weight and trail weight shown separately for tents and packs, where both apply.
- Temperature or load ratings stated exactly as the manufacturer states them, with the test standard if given.
- A fit or size finder for packs, boots and clothing, such as torso length for a backpack.
- What is in the box, and what is not, so nobody buys a tent expecting poles or pegs.
- Warranty information and what to do if something fails.
Comparison tables help a lot when you sell several models in a range. We build them from metafields so the specs stay accurate across the catalogue. Questions and answers from real buyers, supported by apps such as Judge.me, often settle a purchase better than marketing copy. Keep product videos short and hosted on Shopify so they do not slow the page.
Peak seasons and planning for outdoor stores
Outdoor demand moves with the weather and the school calendar, and the stock has to be in place before shoppers go looking.
- Easter and school holidays send camping gear sales up, so tents, stoves and sleeping bags need to be in stock weeks earlier.
- Winter trips and the snow season shift demand to insulation, jackets and thermals from autumn.
- EOFY, Black Friday and Boxing Day are the main sale events for most gear retailers.
- Christmas gifting favours smaller items, such as headlamps, bottles and cookware, so a gift collection is worth building.
Use Klaviyo back-in-stock alerts and pre-orders to capture demand for lines that sell out, and Shopify Bundles for kits such as a two-person camp set. Tag seasonal products so collections update themselves. Freight is the other planning item: tents are bulky and gas products have shipping rules, as covered in the compliance notes above. Test your shipping rates on regional postcodes before the first holiday rush.
Common questions
Can I show product specs in a comparison table?
Yes. We store specs in structured fields and build a comparison feature from them.
Can I sell gas canisters online?
They are dangerous goods for carriers and have strict conditions, and some services will not carry them. Check each carrier's current rules first.
How do I price freight on tents and packs?
Use weight and dimension rates, matched to actual carrier prices. We model your products to avoid flat rates that lose money.
Can I offer kits?
Yes, as bundles with stock tracked per component.
Does Shopify handle a large technical catalogue?
Yes. Filters, metafields and collections scale well. We design the data model first.
Does the manufacturer's warranty replace consumer guarantees?
No. Australian Consumer Law guarantees apply regardless of any manufacturer warranty, and a seller cannot remove them. List the warranty as an extra, and keep your returns page consistent with the law.
Can I sync online stock with a physical store?
Yes. Shopify POS and the online store share one inventory across locations, so a sale in either place updates the count. Set up the locations and barcodes carefully before launch.
