Shopify for swimwear
Shopify for Australian swimwear brands
Swimwear is bought in sets, in specific sizes, and mostly in a short summer window. We build Shopify stores for mix-and-match sizing, clear fit guidance and a strong spring and summer launch.

Example store
Tidepool Swim
A loud, friendly swimwear store that sells separates in the right sizes.
What makes swimwear hard to sell online
Mix and match sizing
Customers often buy a top in one size and bottoms in another. A store that forces one size per set loses those orders.
Fit and returns
Fit is personal and returns are costly. Swimwear often has hygiene rules on returns, which need to be stated clearly at purchase.
Short season
Demand ramps from spring, peaks before Christmas and the summer holidays, and falls away by autumn. Launch timing and stock depth decide the year.
Inventory depth by size
Popular sizes sell out first. Without back-in-stock capture, you lose sales you could have made with a reorder.
What we build into the store
Mix and match builder
Pick a top size and a bottom size, with one add to cart and correct stock for each piece.
Size guide with measurements
Bust, waist and hip in centimetres, with fit notes and a size-finder tool, in a clear modal.
Colour and print swatches
Swatches that switch the gallery and show which sizes remain in each print.
Back-in-stock alerts
Capture demand for sold-out sizes and use the list to guide reorders.
Returns and exchanges
A portal with exchange-first options, and a plain statement about hygiene rules on returns.
Pre-order for new drops
Take orders ahead of arrival on new prints, with clear shipping dates.
The Australian rules we design around
Australian Consumer Law applies to swimwear as to any clothing. A faulty garment must be remedied whatever your returns policy says. Change-of-mind returns, including any exclusion on hygiene grounds, are your own policy and should be stated clearly before purchase. If you advertise sustainability claims, such as recycled fabric, keep them accurate and supported, because misleading environmental claims can breach consumer law. Our returns policy guide explains the difference.
General information, not legal advice. Check with the regulator for your situation.
A store that handles two sizes in one outfit
A normal Shopify product has one set of options. Swimwear sets need two sizes. We solve this with a bundle or a mix-and-match component so that top and bottom are chosen separately, stock is tracked per piece and the cart shows both clearly.
Our concept store Tidepool Swim uses a size guide and a set builder. It is a concept we designed, not a client, so we do not publish results for it.
Planning around the summer calendar
- Launch new prints in early spring, with pre-orders if stock lands later.
- Plan Click Frenzy, Black Friday and Boxing Day offers against your stock depth.
- Show Christmas postage cut-offs from Australia Post's published dates.
- Prepare an end of season sale in autumn to clear what is left.
We pre-build the email flows in Klaviyo. See Klaviyo flows.
Payments, shipping and the first export market
Instalments matter for swimwear, so Afterpay and Zip messaging sits on the product page. See Afterpay and Zip on Shopify. Light parcels suit satchels, and rates are set accordingly. NZ is the usual first export market, as covered in our NZ guide.
Most swimwear labels start on Launch or Custom, depending on how bespoke the design needs to be. See pricing.
What a good swimwear product page needs
Swimwear is bought on fit, and fit is the main reason it comes back. The page has to help a shopper choose two sizes with confidence.
- Separate size selectors for tops and bottoms, so a customer can mix sizes in one outfit.
- A size guide in centimetres, with bust, waist and hip measurements and photos on a range of body types.
- Lining, coverage and support described plainly, such as 'full coverage back' or 'adjustable ties'.
- Fabric composition and care instructions, including how to rinse after chlorine and salt.
- A clear returns note. Many brands do not take back worn swimwear for hygiene reasons, which is a change-of-mind policy, while faulty items are always covered by consumer guarantees.
- UPF information only if the garment has been tested. Sun-protection claims should meet the relevant Australian standard.
Show the model's size and height on every image set. Back-in-stock sign-ups matter because popular prints sell out in single sizes. Our returns policy guide has wording for the hygiene note.
Apps and planning for swimwear stores
The swimwear year is short and the stock is deep by size, so the tools lean towards launches and inventory.
- Shopify Bundles or a mix and match app for sets with different top and bottom sizes.
- A pre-order app that uses Shopify's selling plans, for new prints before stock lands.
- Klaviyo for back-in-stock alerts, launch announcements and abandoned cart emails.
- Kiwi Sizing or a similar app for size charts and fit recommendations.
- Judge.me, Okendo or Stamped for reviews that capture fit.
Launch new ranges in spring, with Christmas, Boxing Day and January as the sales peaks, and end-of-summer clearance after that. Export buyers in the northern hemisphere shop for summer while Australia is in winter, so an offshore market can fill the gap. Set up Shopify Markets early if that is part of the plan.
Common questions
Can customers buy different top and bottom sizes?
Yes. We build a mix and match selector that tracks stock for each piece and adds both to the cart.
Can I refuse returns on swimwear for hygiene reasons?
Change-of-mind returns are your own policy, so you can set conditions, but state them clearly before purchase. Faulty goods still need a remedy under Australian Consumer Law.
How do I handle new drops that arrive late?
Use pre-orders with a clear dispatch date, so customers know when to expect their order.
Can I claim my fabric is sustainable?
Only if you can support the claim. Misleading environmental claims can breach consumer law. Keep wording specific and accurate.
What speeds up checkout on mobile?
Shop Pay, Apple Pay, Afterpay and Zip. We test them on real devices before launch.
How do I sell tops and bottoms in different sizes?
Sell them as separate products with a bundle or mix and match option, or use a bundle app that lets a shopper pick each size. Keep stock tracked per size so inventory stays accurate.
Can I refuse returns on swimwear?
You can set your own change-of-mind rules, including no returns on worn or unhygienic items, if you state them clearly. You cannot refuse a remedy for a faulty product, whatever your policy says.
