Magento (Adobe Commerce) to Shopify

Magento and Adobe Commerce to Shopify migration

Magento stores need servers, patching and developers who know the platform. If that overhead is bigger than the benefit, Shopify takes it off your plate. We migrate your catalogue, customers and orders, and redirect your .html URLs so Google follows you across.

Why brands leave Magento (Adobe Commerce)

  • Running costs. Hosting, security patches, extension licences and Magento developers add up, often well beyond what the store earns from its custom features.
  • Upgrades. Major Magento upgrades are real projects, and extensions often need rewriting.
  • Speed. Magento sites can be slow without careful tuning, and tuning costs money.
  • Developer availability. Skilled Magento developers are harder to find and hire than Shopify developers.
  • Checkout and mobile experience. Shopify's checkout is fast on mobile and supports Afterpay, Zip, Apple Pay and Shop Pay without custom work.

What moves, and how

Products and variants

Simple, configurable and grouped products export and map to Shopify products and variants. Bundle and custom-option products need design decisions.

Categories

Category trees become flat collections, with hierarchy rebuilt in the navigation menu. Anchor and layered navigation filters are replaced by Shopify's storefront filtering.

Customers

Names, emails, addresses and marketing consent move. Passwords do not, because Magento's hashes cannot be imported into Shopify. Customers receive an account invite.

Order history

Historical orders import as records with line items, totals and addresses.

Reviews

Reviews export to CSV and import into a reviews app, with ratings and dates preserved where supported.

Gift cards and store credit

Balances are recreated as Shopify gift cards. We reconcile totals before and after.

CMS pages and blocks

Pages are rebuilt as Shopify pages or theme sections. Static blocks become sections the team can edit.

Customer groups and tier pricing

Rebuilt as Shopify price lists on Plus, or as tags plus an app on other plans.

What changes in your URLs

Many Magento stores add .html to product and category URLs, for example /linen-shirt.html and /mens/shirts.html. This is a configurable setting, and some stores also include the category path in product URLs. Shopify has no .html suffix and uses /products/ and /collections/ prefixes.

Magento also generates a lot of URL variants, with category-path product URLs, layered navigation parameters and session-style parameters. We use your sitemap, a crawl and Search Console to decide which URLs earn traffic, redirect those with permanent 301s and let parameter noise drop.

Typical patterns. Magento URL rewrites vary, and we export yours from the admin.
MagentoShopify
/linen-shirt.html/products/linen-shirt
/mens/shirts.html/collections/mens-shirts
/catalog/product/view/id/123/products/linen-shirt
/blog/post-title (extension)/blogs/news/post-title

What needs real work

  • Extensions. Each Magento extension is reviewed. Many become Shopify apps or native features, and some custom ones need rebuilding as theme code or apps.
  • Complex pricing. Catalogue price rules and cart rules map to Shopify discounts and Functions. Some are not possible without Plus.
  • Multi-store views. Magento store views for different regions become Shopify Markets or separate stores.
  • ERP and inventory. Integrations are rebuilt, often through an app such as Cin7 or a custom connector. See apps and integrations.
  • Product attributes. Hundreds of attributes are reduced to the ones that drive filtering and display, stored as metafields or tags.

How the migration runs

  1. Step 1

    Extension and data audit

We list every extension, attribute and integration, and decide whether each is rebuilt, replaced or retired.

  2. Step 2

    Design and build

We build the Shopify theme and import data to staging, reconciling every count.

  3. Step 3

    Redirects and QA

We load the URL map and test checkout, tax, shipping and integrations.

  4. Step 4

    Launch

We cut over at a quiet time and monitor Search Console and orders closely.

Migrations are included in the Custom package ($18,500 ex GST). Magento stores with many integrations, B2B or multiple regions are normally quoted within Plus. See pricing and the migration service.

Protecting your Google rankings

  • Step 1Export the Magento URL rewrite table and sitemap, then crawl the live site to capture every indexed URL, including .html addresses.
  • Step 2301 each product and category .html address to the matching /products/ or /collections/ page, prioritising by Search Console clicks and backlinks.
  • Step 3Redirect category-path product URLs and old /catalog/product/view/ addresses to the single canonical Shopify product URL.
  • Step 4Handle layered navigation and filter parameters on purpose, redirecting those that rank and letting others drop.
  • Step 5Carry over titles, meta descriptions and image alt text, then resubmit the sitemap and monitor 404s after launch.

When to stay on Magento (Adobe Commerce)

Magento and Adobe Commerce still make sense for very large catalogues with deep custom logic, such as complex pricing rules, multi-warehouse allocation or bespoke B2B workflows built over years. If you have an in-house team that knows the system, and the custom features directly earn revenue, rebuilding them on Shopify may cost more than it saves. Adobe Commerce also suits enterprises already inside the Adobe ecosystem. Most small and mid-sized Australian retailers on Magento are carrying more platform than they use, but not all. We will review your extensions and tell you honestly. See Shopify Plus for the enterprise end.

Magento (Adobe Commerce) to Shopify: common questions

Can Shopify do everything my Magento extensions do?

Most, through apps or native features. A few highly custom ones need rebuilding. We review each extension in the audit and tell you what replaces it, what it costs and what we recommend dropping.

Will my .html URLs still work?

Not natively. We set 301 redirects from every important .html address to its new Shopify URL, so visitors and Google arrive at the right page.

Do customers keep their passwords?

No. Magento password hashes cannot be imported into Shopify. Customers receive an account invite, and can check out as guests.

Will I save money by leaving Magento?

Often, because hosting, patching and developer time fall away, but it depends on how much you pay now and what apps you need on Shopify. We compare costs honestly in the audit.

Do I need Shopify Plus?

Not necessarily. Plus makes sense for B2B, multiple markets, heavy checkout customisation or large sale events. Read our guide on whether Shopify Plus is worth it in Australia.

How long does a Magento migration take?

6 to 12 weeks depending on catalogue size, extensions and integrations. Complex B2B or multi-region stores take longer.
