Guide
Is Shopify Plus worth it for an Australian brand?
Plus starts at $3,700 AUD a month. Most stores do not need it. Some really do. Here is how to tell which side you are on.
Updated 31 October 2026. 9 minute read.
The short answer
Most Australian brands do not need Shopify Plus. It starts at $3,700 AUD a month, against $575 for Advanced on monthly billing, a gap of $3,125 a month. Card savings alone do not justify it, because the card rate improves by only 0.20 percentage points. Move to Plus for checkout extensibility, Functions, unlimited B2B catalogs or up to 9 expansion stores, and if none of those apply, stay on Advanced.
What Plus costs
Shopify's Australian pricing page lists Shopify Plus as starting at $3,700 AUD a month. It does not publish a separate yearly price for Plus, and its FAQ refers to a 1-year or 3-year Plus subscription, with cancellation possible once the term ends. Treat $3,700 as the entry point, not a quote.
Shopify does not publish how its Plus fee changes as your sales grow, and the figures that circulate on agency blogs do not match each other. We have left them out. Ask Shopify for the full terms in writing before you decide, including how the monthly fee changes at higher sales volumes.
| Advanced | Plus | |
|---|---|---|
| Monthly billing | $575 AUD | From $3,700 AUD |
| Yearly billing, per month | $431 AUD | Not listed separately |
| Online card rate (Shopify Payments) | 1.35% + 30c | 1.15% + 30c |
| Third-party gateway fee | 0.6% | 0.2% |
| Expansion stores | Not included | Up to 9 free |
| B2B catalogs | Up to 3 active | Unlimited |
The gap in the monthly fee is $3,125 a month on monthly billing, or $37,500 over a year. The gap in card rate is 0.20 percentage points. Dividing one by the other gives a quick test: card savings alone cover the extra subscription only at around $1.56 million a month in card sales. That is our arithmetic from the published rates, and it ignores any variable fee Shopify applies. It tells you something useful, though. Nobody should move to Plus to save on card fees. If you move, it should be for what Plus lets you build.
What Plus adds over Advanced
Checkout you can change
Checkout extensibility is the main reason larger brands move. Shopify's developer documentation says Plus stores can add UI extensions to the checkout, thank you and order status pages. Stores on Basic, Grow and Advanced can add extensions to the thank you and order status pages only. In practice, that means a Plus store can add things like a custom upsell, a gift message field or a delivery-date picker inside checkout itself.
Shopify's pricing page also says Plus includes a fully customisable checkout and custom Functions. Functions are small pieces of code that run inside Shopify to change how discounts, shipping options or payment options behave. Examples are tiered wholesale discounts, hiding a payment method for certain carts or renaming a shipping option based on the products in the cart. Check the plan requirement for each Function you need, because availability depends on the type of Function and the app that provides it.
B2B and wholesale
B2B is no longer Plus-only. Shopify's help centre says you can use Shopify B2B on Basic, Grow, Advanced and Plus. The limits differ. On the lower plans you can assign up to 3 active catalogs across your B2B markets, and you cannot assign a catalog directly to a company or location. Plus can assign catalogs directly to companies and locations for customer-level pricing, and the pricing page lists unlimited B2B catalogs.
If you have a handful of price tiers, you may not need Plus for wholesale. If every stockist has its own negotiated price list, you probably do. Our Shopify B2B and wholesale service covers both setups.
Expansion stores
Shopify's pricing page says Plus includes up to 9 free expansion stores. These are extra stores under the same Plus organisation, useful for a separate brand, a different region with its own catalogue, or a staging store. If you only sell in Australia and New Zealand, Shopify Markets on a single store is usually the simpler answer.
Launchpad and other Plus tools
Launchpad is a Plus-only app for scheduling events such as sales, product drops and inventory restocks, with a dashboard that tracks how an event performs. Shopify's help page notes that overlapping events cannot be scheduled. It is handy for Click Frenzy, Black Friday and end-of-financial-year sales when you want the store to switch over at midnight without someone awake to do it.
A smaller difference that matters in a migration: Shopify's help centre lists a limit of 100,000 URL redirects on standard stores and 20,000,000 on Plus. Very few stores hit the lower limit, but a large catalogue with many years of URL history can. See our migration checklist.
When Plus makes sense
Shopify does not publish a revenue line where Plus becomes the right plan, and we are not going to invent one. A more useful test is a short list of questions. If you answer yes to two or more, ask Shopify for a Plus quote.
- Do you need to change the checkout itself, beyond the thank you page, for business reasons such as custom fields, delivery rules or compliance steps?
- Do you run wholesale with customer-specific price lists, rather than two or three shared tiers?
- Do you operate more than one brand or region that needs its own store, staff permissions or catalogue?
- Do sale days put real pressure on a small team, so that scheduled changes would save hours and mistakes?
- Are you connecting an ERP or warehouse system and need the extra controls that come with a custom build?
- Is your store large enough that the monthly fee gap is a small share of your sales and a rounding error against the labour you would save?
If you answered yes to none, stay on Advanced, put the difference into design, speed and email, and revisit in a year. Many of the Plus talking points have lower-plan equivalents: B2B catalogs and a wide app ecosystem. Extra budget spent on conversion work usually returns more than extra subscription.
What a Plus build looks like
A Plus build is bigger than a template store. It usually includes checkout customisation, B2B setup, a staged launch and integration with an ERP or 3PL. Our Plus package is a fixed quote after a scoping call, runs 12 weeks and up, and covers Shopify Plus setup, checkout extensibility and Functions, B2B price lists, Markets for NZ, UK and US, and integrations with NetSuite, Cin7, Xero or your warehouse. See also the Shopify Plus service page.
We will also tell you when Plus is the wrong call. If you are on Advanced and your issue is a slow theme or a messy catalogue, the fix is a rebuild on the plan you already pay for. Our Custom package is built for that. For the overall cost picture, read what a Shopify website costs in Australia.
Before you ask for a quote
Step 1
Write down what you cannot do today
List the specific checkout, wholesale or multi-store needs you have right now. Vague goals like growth do not help a quote.
Step 2
Check each need against the plan
Many items on a Plus feature list also exist on Advanced. Confirm each one in Shopify's help centre or developer documentation.
Step 3
Get the fee terms in writing
Ask Shopify for the monthly fee, the term length and how the fee changes at higher volumes. These are not on the public page.
Step 4
Cost the build, not just the plan
A checkout extension or ERP link has a development cost on top of the subscription. Get that quote before you commit.
Questions
How much does Shopify Plus cost in Australia?
Shopify's Australian pricing page lists Plus as starting at $3,700 AUD a month. Terms of 1 or 3 years are mentioned in its FAQ. Ask Shopify for the full terms in writing, including how the fee changes with sales volume.
Do I need Plus for wholesale?
Not always. Shopify B2B is available on Basic, Grow, Advanced and Plus. The lower plans allow up to 3 active catalogs and no direct catalog assignment to companies. Plus allows direct assignment and unlimited catalogs.
Can I customise checkout without Plus?
Partly. Per Shopify's developer documentation, plans above Starter can add extensions to the thank you and order status pages, but only Plus stores can add UI extensions inside the checkout itself.
What is Launchpad?
Launchpad is a Plus-only Shopify app for scheduling sales, product drops and restocks so they start and end automatically. It cannot run overlapping events.
Can I move from Advanced to Plus later?
Yes. Plenty of stores start on a standard plan and move up once they need Plus features. Plan the move around your checkout, wholesale or multi-store requirements, and cost any development work that comes with it.
