Shopify for wine and liquor
Shopify for Australian wineries and liquor sellers
Selling alcohol online in Australia comes with licensing, age checks and shipping rules that other stores never see. We build Shopify stores for wineries and bottle shops that handle these properly, with wine clubs and cellar-door sales included.

Example store
Coolabah Cellars
A restrained winery store with an age gate and a wine club that runs itself.
What makes wine and liquor hard to sell online
Licensing and age verification
Selling alcohol requires the right licence in the state where you operate, and online sellers generally have to verify age. The exact obligations vary by state and change over time.
Shipping alcohol
Carriers have specific services and packaging rules for alcohol, and delivery conditions such as age checks on receipt. State rules affect where you can send.
Wine clubs
Recurring shipments, allocations and member pricing need subscription logic that is more than a standard recurring order.
Mixed sales
Cellar door, events, wholesale and online sales all draw from the same stock.
What we build into the store
Age gate and checkout checks
An age confirmation on entry and a clear age statement at checkout, with delivery notes. For stricter verification, an approved age verification service can be added.
Licence details displayed
Licence number and required notices shown where regulators expect them, such as the footer and checkout.
Wine club
Recurring shipments with tiers, skip options and member pricing, using a subscription app.
Case and mixed-dozen options
Mixed cases with discounts, and bundles that track stock per bottle.
Shipping rules by state
Rates and restrictions set per state and postcode, with warnings where you cannot deliver.
POS and inventory sync
Shopify POS for cellar door, with one stock count across online and in-person sales.
The Australian rules we design around
Selling alcohol is regulated at state and territory level, and each has its own liquor licensing law. Online sellers generally need the right licence for where they sell and ship, and rules on age verification, signage and delivery vary by state. In New South Wales, for example, same-day delivery has specific requirements including age verification at purchase and delivery. Responsible service of alcohol training may be required for staff, and you should check state requirements for your role. Australia Post offers a dedicated wine service for eligible account customers, and it has rules on packaging and a declaration for deliveries to Victoria, so check its current wine guide. Always confirm current rules with your state liquor regulator, because we describe them in general terms only. Our guide to selling alcohol online on Shopify goes further.
General information, not legal advice. Check with the regulator for your situation.
Compliance first, then design
We start by listing where you hold licences, where you ship and what each state or carrier requires. That list decides the age check, the checkout wording, the delivery options and the pages we build. It is cheaper to design around the rules than to retrofit them.
Our concept store Coolabah Cellars has an age gate and wine club layout. It is a concept we designed, not a client, so it holds no real licence.
Shipping wine and spirits
- Use a carrier service approved for alcohol, and follow its packaging rules.
- State delivery conditions at checkout, such as an adult needing to be present to receive and show ID.
- Restrict shipping to states and postcodes you are licensed and able to serve.
- Show carrier cut-offs before Christmas and keep stock levels accurate across cellar door and online.
Read our shipping guide for the carrier detail.
Wine clubs and the sale calendar
Wine clubs create predictable revenue. We set up tiers, allocations and release dates, with email announcements through Klaviyo. EOFY, Black Friday and Christmas are big for gifting, so we prepare gift options and last-order dates.
Wineries often need Custom for the design and club logic, and larger sellers may need Plus. See pricing or contact us.
What a good wine product page needs
A wine page should read like a good cellar door conversation, while meeting the compliance rules of your licence.
- Vintage, region, variety and producer, in a consistent layout.
- Tasting notes in plain words, with a food pairing line.
- Alcohol content and standard drinks, copied from the label.
- A cellaring suggestion, only if the winemaker supports it.
- Single bottle, six and twelve pack prices where you offer them, with mixed case options.
- Your licence number and a plain age statement near the add to cart button, as your licence conditions require.
Only list medals, awards and critic scores that are real, with the source and year, and remove them if they are out of date. Wine clubs deserve their own page, with tiers, delivery frequency and a clear explanation of what members receive. Metafields keep tasting and vintage fields tidy across the range.
Apps we use for wine and liquor stores
The stack for a licensed seller is small but each piece has a compliance job.
- An age verification app such as AgeChecker.net at checkout, if your licence and state rules call for more than a pop-up.
- Shopify Subscriptions or Recharge for wine clubs and recurring orders.
- Klaviyo for club renewal reminders, new release announcements and cellar door follow-ups.
- Shopify POS for the cellar door, with online and in-person stock counted together.
- Shopify Flow to tag orders by delivery state so the team packs and books the right service.
We configure these to suit your licence, but we do not decide what your licence requires. Check state rules with the regulator. Our guide to selling alcohol online with Shopify sets out the questions to ask before you build.
Common questions
Do I need a licence to sell wine online?
Generally yes. Alcohol licensing is set by each state or territory, so the right licence depends on where you operate. Check with your state liquor regulator.
Is a pop-up age gate enough?
A pop-up alone is usually not enough. Rules often require age checks at purchase and delivery. Confirm requirements with your regulator.
Can I ship alcohol with Australia Post?
Australia Post has a wine service for eligible account customers, with packaging rules and conditions. Check its current guide.
Can Shopify run a wine club?
Yes, using a subscription app configured for tiers, skips and member pricing.
Do you provide legal advice?
No. We build the store around the requirements you confirm with your regulator or adviser.
Can I run a cellar door and an online store on one stock count?
Yes. Shopify POS and the online store share inventory across locations, so a bottle sold at the cellar door comes off the online count. Set each location up correctly during the build.
Can I ship wine to New Zealand?
Selling alcohol across the Tasman involves New Zealand licensing, duty and carrier rules, so check them with the relevant authorities and your carrier before you turn on a New Zealand market for alcohol.
