Shopify for furniture

Shopify for Australian furniture makers and retailers

Furniture is large, expensive and slow to decide on. We build Shopify stores that show finishes and dimensions properly, quote freight by postcode and handle made-to-order lead times honestly.

Example store

Blackbutt Furniture

A concept store for a furniture maker where size, timber and delivery are clear before checkout.

What makes furniture hard to sell online

Bulky freight

Tables, beds and sideboards ship by freight, not satchel. Cost varies by postcode, delivery type and whether it is white glove, so flat rates break quickly.

Made to order

Timber furniture takes weeks to make. Customers need honest lead times, clear deposits and updates during the build.

Long decisions

Buyers research for weeks. Dimensions, finishes, materials and room photos need to be clear, and sample or showroom visits must be easy to book.

High order values

Larger baskets need instalments, secure payment options and a clear returns and warranty policy.

What we build into the store

Delivery quote by postcode

Enter a postcode to see a freight estimate or a request-a-quote option, using carrier rates or a freight app.

Finish and size options

Timber, stain and size selectors with price changes, swatch images and sample requests.

Made-to-order messaging

Lead times in the product page, cart and confirmation email, with order status updates.

Deposit and balance payments

Take a deposit at order and collect the balance before dispatch, using draft orders or an app.

Showroom and appointment links

Booking links for viewings and consultations, and stock locations if you have more than one.

Afterpay and Zip for large orders

Instalments where limits allow. Check each provider's current limits.

Freight is the hard part

Freight cost depends on size, weight, origin, destination and delivery service. Many furniture sellers use a quote-based approach for remote addresses and live rates for major metro areas. We set shipping profiles by product and postcode, and where live rates are not possible we build a request-a-quote flow that captures the address and the delivery details.

Our concept store Blackbutt Furniture uses a delivery quote tool. It is a concept we designed, not a client.

Made-to-order without surprises

  • State lead times as a range, and update them when your workshop schedule changes.
  • Take a deposit up front and the balance before dispatch.
  • Send order status updates at key points, such as materials ordered, in build and ready to ship.
  • Be clear on cancellation terms for custom orders, within consumer law.

Faulty goods still need a remedy under consumer law, whatever your terms say. See returns under consumer law.

Sales calendar and wholesale

Furniture sales cluster around EOFY, Black Friday and Boxing Day. Delivery windows are longer than parcels, so we set realistic Christmas delivery cut-offs early. If you supply interior designers or retailers, we add trade pricing through tags and an app, or Plus B2B.

Furniture sellers commonly need Custom for the quote logic and design, and larger retailers may need Plus. See pricing, the apps and integrations service, or contact us.

What a good furniture product page needs

Furniture is a big, slow decision. The page should reduce the risk of buying a large item online.

  • Exact dimensions in centimetres, with a dimensioned drawing and seat or table heights.
  • Weight and the packed dimensions, which matter for freight and for getting it through a door.
  • Materials and finishes, with swatches and, ideally, low-cost sample options.
  • Lead time for made-to-order pieces, and the delivery timing after that.
  • Assembly requirements, and whether delivery includes setup.
  • Room photos at real scale, with a person or familiar object for reference.

Selling fabric or timber samples as a low-priced product lets shoppers feel the finish before committing, and the cost can be credited against an order. Show a delivery estimate by postcode near the button, so there are no surprises. Add a clear returns and cancellation position for made-to-order items.

Delivery, apps and planning for furniture stores

Freight and timing decide how furniture sells, so the tools lean towards delivery and communication.

  • Shopify shipping profiles with rates by region and product, or carrier-calculated rates on the plans that include them.
  • Klaviyo flows for order updates, delivery booking and care instructions after delivery.
  • Shopify Flow to tag oversized orders and send them to the right freight partner.
  • Judge.me, Okendo or Stamped for reviews with photos of the finished room.
  • Shopify POS if you also run a showroom, so stock and customers are in one place.

Spring is a busy season for moves and renovations, and EOFY, Black Friday and Boxing Day drive sales events. Show delivery windows clearly during peak periods, because carriers get busy too. If something arrives damaged, ask the buyer for photos on delivery and report it to the carrier quickly. Consumer guarantees still apply to the goods. Our shipping guide covers rates and carriers.

Common questions

Can Shopify quote freight by postcode?

Yes, using carrier-calculated rates, a freight app or a custom quote form, depending on your carriers.

Can I take a deposit?

Yes. We use draft orders or a payments app to take a deposit and collect the balance later.

How do I show finishes accurately?

Use swatch images, real photographs per finish and a sample request option.

Can I sell made-to-order items with different lead times?

Yes. Lead times are set per product and shown on the page, cart and emails.

Does Afterpay work for expensive furniture?

Providers have limits, which change. Check the current limits and we configure messaging accordingly.

Can I sell fabric or timber swatches?

Yes. Create swatches as a low-priced product with its own shipping profile, and offer a code or credit toward the main order. Photograph each sample in the same light as the product.

What if furniture arrives damaged?

Ask customers to photograph the item and packaging at delivery and contact you quickly, then lodge a claim with the carrier. Under Australian Consumer Law, a customer who receives faulty or damaged goods is entitled to a remedy from you.
